With so many products now available on the market it is more important than ever to ensure your new Air Conditioning System is energy Efficient.

As you would have seen with new refrigerators and other domestic appliances for years prior to now – all new air conditioning systems must have an Energy Rating to enable you make an informed decision about your potential purchase.

All of our quotations will show clearly the Energy Rating of the air conditioner in Cooling mode (and if applicable in Heating/Heat-Pump mode).

Below is an extract from The National Energy Foundation’s website which explains the theory…

Room Air Conditioners (RACs) are being increasingly used in the UK, especially in small computer rooms in otherwise naturally ventilated offices or factories. As part of its commitment to reduce CO2 emissions under the Kyoto protocol, the European Union has required member states, including Britain, to introduce a common EU Energy Label on RACs.

Background

Room Air Conditioners are generally used to cool areas of up to 100m2 in industry and commerce; they are only rarely used domestically. Four main types of units are covered by the new labelling regulations:

Single-packaged units
Split-packaged units
Multi-split-packaged units
Single-duct air-conditioners
The units may be air or water cooled and there are separate standards for each main type. The regulations do not apply to portable spot air-conditioners, dehumidifiers or evaporant or desiccant coolers.

The performance is generally measured using an energy efficiency ratio (EER), where:

EER = Pc / Pe

and Pc is the cooling capacity of the air conditioner and Pe the electrical consumption, both measured in kW.

The Label

In common with other, mainly domestic, equipment covered by EU energy labels, room air-conditioners are graded on a scale from A-G, where A represents the best equipment that is widely available, and G the worst. The EU also intends the use the labelling process to introduce mandatory minimum standards at a later date.

If you are intending to purchase or specify room air-conditioning equipment, there are two main questions that you should ask:

Is it necessary to use any air-conditioning?
What is the energy label of the proposed equipment?

The first question is not as stupid as it may seem. Small computer servers can often operate without being in a cooled environment. If there is a general problem with overheating in summer (not just for operating computers), this may sometimes be alleviated by providing external shading or heat-reflecting films to glazed areas. If the over-heating is not severe, it may also be possible to use a simple extract fan without artificial cooling. And it is always worth checking that if there is also heating to a computer room, then the systems are properly controlled so that the heating does not come on unnecessarily, creating an enhanced requirement for cooling.

If, on the other hand, it seems that some form of cooling is necessary to ensure an acceptable comfort level or guaranteed operating temperature within a manufacturer’s specified range, then you should look carefully at the new energy rating. Equipment with a higher rating may cost a little more initially, but G-rated equipment will use 50% more electricity under normal operating conditions than A-rated units. The energy label will also show estimated annual energy consumption in kWh; comparing two labels on different RACs will enable the annual cost saving between one and the other to be calculated quite simply.

If you don’t know how long an RAC will be used for, we suggest using 500 hours as a very broad average, although in the USA – where the climate is generally warmer in summer – a figure of 750 hours is regarded as normal.

Heating Mode

Some room air conditioners have a heating mode where, in essence, the internal systems can be reversed for use in winter to produce warm air for the room and to expel cooled air outside. RACs with this function must quote a second A-G rating for the heating mode, based upon the coefficient of performance (CoP): in simple terms the CoP expresses how many more times useful heat is produced than electricity is used to drive the system. Water-based systems generally have higher coefficients of performance, with packaged units being better than split systems on this measure.

The Energy Label for Room Air Conditioners with an input power of less than 12kW was first introduced on 1 January 2003, and was significantly revised for equipment sold after August 2005. All RACs offered for sale after that date (except second-hand equipment) must have a label displayed clearly on the unit, as well as being provided with an accompanying fact sheet.

Link to SI 2005 No. 1726 defining the information to be displayed on the Energy Label.

Perfect for the home or commercial environment – Mitsubishi’s legendary multi system is now even better!

The MXZ multi-split heat pump systems allow up to eight individually controlled indoor units to be connected directly to a single outdoor unit and are available between 5.2 and 15.5kW in size.

The indoor units can be wall mounted, ceiling cassette, ducted, floor or ceiling mounted types and can be selected from both our M Series and Mr Slim ranges. This wide choice allows different types of indoor units at different capacities to be used on the same system, enabling the ideal unit type and size to be specified for each individual room or location.

By installing a system in this way installation space, costs and time are all significantly reduced. Indoor units may then also be added within the capacity of the system as future requirements change, making the MXZ extremely flexible.

Staff of Kool-It together with a group of friends joined over 8000 bike riders on the 2011 Manchester to Blackpool bike ride.

The bike ride was in aid of The Christie Charitable Fund. Their charity raises money to fund projects at The Christie which are outside the scope of the NHS. Last year they raised nearly £12 million which funded a whole range of things, including a new radiopharmacy, to communications skills training for nursing staff, a new state-of-the-art surgical robot, groundbreaking cancer research and our wig service (to name but a few).

Donations from friends, family, well wishers and customers from everyone of the team totaled nearly £3,000 – so all in all an excellent result which we hope will go some way to helping this great cause!

First past the finish line (from the gents) were Andy Smith, Jason Cordwell and Mark Fleet who rode as a trio! Much respect goes out to Andy Smith who kept up with (and passed many – so I’m told) the road race bikes – on his mountain bike complete with off road knobbly tyres! Now that’s determination!

First past the finish line (from the ladies) was Stephanie Beresford who managed to arrive an hour or so before the other ladies! Looks like that new bike was a great investment!

Congratulations to everyone who took part and good luck for next year!

The bleary eyed (well it was 6am) Kool-Riders team comprised of (from Left to Right):

Mark Fleet, Karl Hennessey, Louise Hennessey, Jason Cordwell, Clare Smith, Stephanie Beresford, Andrew Beresford, Lynne Martin, Andy Smith and Carla Stark.

This proves that Kool-It is committed to ensuring it’s engineers are ahead of the competition by achieving full certification by the 4th July 2011 deadline.

The Refcom Register of Companies Competent to Handle Refrigerants was set up in 1994 in response to atmospheric damage caused by certain refrigerant gases.

Since then the Register has evolved to cover fluorinated refrigerant gases which if released to atmosphere have a global warming potential significantly higher than CO2.

In June 2009, Refcom Certification Ltd was appointed by the Secretary of State for the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs to operate a Certification Body under the stationary equipment provisions of the Fluorinated Greenhouse Gases Regulations 2009 No 261. Subsequently, Refcom was also appointed by the Department of Environment in Northern Ireland under separate NI Regulations.

The new heat recovery fresh air ventilator from Mitsubishi Electric not only maintains the ideal temperature, but keeps the air fresh too.

The new DC Lossnay is a highly efficient and effective choice for commercial offices and schools, which are often highly insulated and air tight. By combining air conditioning with CO2 removal, the DC Lossnay can maintain the required temperature and keep the air fresh, with minimal heat loss.

The result is a reduction of up to 30% on initial capital costs of heating and cooling.

The low noise levels of the DC Lossnay are also an advantage, particularly in school classrooms. The commonly accepted standard for classroom noise level is NR30/NR35, and the DC Lossnay achieves NR30 at distances as near as 1m to the duct.

With its CO2 monitoring and control option, the DC Lossnay can change its fan speed to suit CO2 levels, and can be linked with a PIR sensor or switch. There is also a bypass mode which enables the unit to provide free cooling at many times throughout the year.

From 4th August 2009, there will be major changes to ECA (Enhanced Capital Allowance)…

Many units are disappearing from the ECA list of qualifying products and VRV combinations. The new higher requirements will mean as much as 80% of heat pump units on sale in the UK market will not qualify for the ECA scheme.

Daikin will, in the main, remain unaffected by the changes to the current ECA regulations:

Hi-CoP VRVIII Heat Recovery – 100% of range still qualifies
Hi-CoP VRVIII 2-pipe – 100% of range still qualifies
VRVIII small footprint – 50% of range still qualifies
Split and Sky Air – more than 35% of range still qualifies

Energy Labels

The new levels equate to energy label A:A for all Split and Sky Air combinations.
The new levels for VRV(F) are:CoP 3.70 and EER 3.30
(The old levels for VRV(F) were:CoP 3.40 and EER 3.00 – energy label B:B)

VRV(F) is generally so efficient that minimum CoP and EER levels, required for ECA qualification, are higher than for other product types. Only the most efficient 20 – 25% of products in each category are listed.

Don’t miss out

Products currently on the ECA list, which will not meet the new criteria, will continue to qualify only until the change comes into effect on 4th August 2009.
