Rick joined the Kool-It team full time in February 1994 as an apprentice, with our Engineering Director, Roy Dearden. What followed was four years of technical college studying refrigeration and air conditioning systems; ultimately achieving industry recognised NVQ Level 2 , NVQ Level 3 and City & Guilds 2078 qualifications. Significant experience was gained in service, maintenance and installation of all kinds of refrigeration and air conditioning systems – learning the fundamentals from one of the “old-school” engineers.

As the market place started to embrace air conditioning most of his time was taken up carrying out surveys and preparing quotations. This ultimately led to a full time move into sales/projecting in 2002. Having had years worth of hand’s on experience he is ideally placed to provide an engineer’s perspective on any kind of job – knowing, from experience, what will work, what won’t work and most importantly the best way to achieve it within a given budget. Rick will normally oversee all aspects of the procurement process right from initial site-survey through to installation hand-over – giving you one point of contact throughout your job. More recently, along with all of our engineers, Rick has obtained his C&G 2079 F-Gas Category 1 certificate.

Roy Dearden – Service Director

Roy started in the trade in the late 1950’s with the Lancashire agent for Temperature of Fulham; working on applications from cellar cooling to large ‘Versatemp’ air conditioning systems. Roy emigrated in the early 1960’s to Australia where he worked for Westinghouse, Kelvinator and Frigidaire of Australia; servicing their full ranges of refrigeration and air conditioning systems – located everywhere from supermarket’s to ships! Upon returning to England in the late 1960’s Roy joined Lancashire Refrigeration as Senior Refrigeration Engineer in charge of Manchester University’s new Atlas Computer’s cooling system (Atlas was the world’s first transistorised computer). Roy and his wife, Betty, saw an opportunity in 1972 to start up on their own and Salford Refrigeration (the earliest incarnation of Kool-It) was born! Roy carried out all aspects of refrigeration work on Ammonia systems, low temperature systems, cold storage rooms, large air conditioning equipment and pack refrigeration equipment. Betty was hard at work behind the scenes preparing fridge cabinets for resale and doing all the administration work. They were joined by their son, Rick, in the late 1990’s. Roy is now found overseeing our service business and is still very much a hands on part of our team – Roy is our commercial and industrial refrigeration expert.

Betty Dearden – Director

Betty met Roy when he was working at Lancashire Refrigeration. Betty was, amongst other things, in charge of their fleet of engineers. Betty and Roy saw an opportunity in 1972 to start up on their own and Salford Refrigeration (the earliest incarnation of Kool-It) was born! Betty was hard at work behind the scenes preparing fridge cabinets for resale and doing all the administration work! It was only in 2006 when Clare joined the team that Betty took a well deserved back seat from doing all the administration and PR work the company demands. Betty is now doing all she can to enjoy her retirement whilst battling the problem of having a work-a-holic husband!

Clare joined the Kool-It team in 2006. She is responsible for the day to day operational aspects of the company including dealing with accounts and looking after our service and maintenance related business.

Clare should be your first port of call for any of the following:

account queries (both purchase and sales ledger)
if you wish to set up a maintenance contract with us
if you wish to request a service call on any equipment (installed by us or not installed by us)

The Team

Our installation and service team bring over 100 years combined knowledge and know how to the table. They’ll ensure your new or existing equipment is installed, serviced and maintained as it was meant to be. Always smart and always polite – they are the backbone of our business.

Our sales team are all qualified, time-served air conditioning and refrigeration engineers. We understand what works and what doesn’t from an engineer’s perspective. It is this unique insight that sets us apart from our competitors. We won’t sell you something to meet a monthly target - we’ll sell you something because it’s right for your project.

We frequently carry out installations on behalf of other refrigeration and air conditioning companies when they either don’t have the experience, time or calibre of engineers available to install the systems themselves. We pride ourselves on our ability to provide this service as it means we are highly respected and trusted by other members of our industry to carry out work on their behalf.
